Reverb Coffee exists because most “best coffee gear” lists are written by people who never plugged the machine in. We do it differently: we buy or borrow the equipment, live with it on our own counters, and pull real shots before we rank anything. Here is exactly how that works — so you can judge our recommendations for yourself.

Our testing process

Every machine, grinder, and bag of beans we recommend goes through the same hands-on routine:

1. Real-world setup. We unbox and install the gear the way you would at home — no lab, no factory tuning. First impressions, footprint, heat-up time, and how intuitive it is all get noted on day one.
2. Daily use for weeks, not minutes. We use each product as a daily driver. That is the only way quirks surface: a portafilter that drips, a steam wand that is awkward, a grinder that retains stale coffee, a machine that needs babysitting every morning.
3. Dialing in. We dial in espresso properly — adjusting grind size, dose, and shot ratio — so we judge each machine at its best, not on a bad first pull.
4. Side-by-side comparison. Where possible we test competitors together, so a recommendation reflects how a product holds up against its real alternatives at the same price.
5. Living with the downsides. We deliberately look for what goes wrong — cleaning hassle, noise, plastic build, limited control — and we report it plainly.

How we score

We weigh the things that actually affect your daily cup and your wallet:

• Cup quality — can it make genuinely good espresso, and how hard is it to get there?
• Ease of use — heat-up time, workflow, and how much it fights you in the morning.
• Build & longevity — materials, repairability, and how it holds up over time.
• Value — performance relative to price, not price alone.
• Who it is for — and, just as importantly, who it is not for.
