Hands-on reviews

Coffee Equipment Reviews

In-depth, hands-on reviews of the machines and gear we’ve lived with — the good, the annoying, and who each one is really for.

A review is only worth reading if the reviewer actually used the thing. We buy or borrow every machine, live with it for weeks, and report what daily ownership is really like — not just what the box promises. Below are the machines and grinders we’ve put through their paces.

Each pick links to its current price; full individual write-ups are rolling out. For the quick verdict, our category guides rank everything head-to-head.

How a Reverb review actually works

Most ‘reviews’ online are rewritten spec sheets — someone reading the box and ranking products they’ve never touched. Ours start the opposite way: we get the actual machine on our counter and live with it. A real review needs time, because the things that matter most only show up after the honeymoon: how consistent it is on a rushed Monday, how annoying it is to clean, whether the steam wand keeps up, and whether you still reach for it three weeks in.

We run each product through the same gauntlet for weeks before writing a word — dialing in grind and dose, pulling dozens of shots, texturing milk, cleaning and descaling, and noting every small frustration and delight along the way.

What we score — and what we ignore

Every machine and grinder is scored on five things you actually feel every morning: shot quality (taste, crema, extraction), steam & milk (power and ease of texturing microfoam), consistency (does it repeat, shot after shot), ease of use & cleaning, and value for the price. We weight real-world results over spec-sheet bragging rights — a machine with a huge boiler that makes mediocre espresso still loses.

What we ignore: marketing buzzwords, paid placements, and pressure from brands. We buy or borrow the gear ourselves, and a commission has never once nudged a score. If we wouldn’t put our own money on it, it doesn’t earn a recommendation.

Why trust Reverb

We test before we rank.

Every product here earns its place hands-on. We buy or borrow the gear, live with it, and score it on real-world use — never on spec sheets, and never for pay. An affiliate link has never once changed a ranking on this site.

Reviews FAQ

How do you test products for review?

We use each product hands-on for weeks — dialing in grind and dose, pulling daily shots, steaming milk and cleaning up — then score it on shot quality, steam, consistency, ease and value.

Are your reviews sponsored?

No. We’re reader-supported through affiliate links, but brands can’t pay for a review or a higher ranking. Our commission is the same wherever a product lands.

How often do you update your reviews?

We revisit reviews as new models launch, prices shift, or long-term reliability reveals itself — so our rankings reflect what’s actually worth buying now.
